CSIR researcher presents paper on Africa's development future Print friendly version

IPS Finland 20th Anniversary Seminar presenters (from Left to Right) Geci Karuri, Jorma T. Mattila, Ramesh Jaura, Lauri Siitonen and Pia Korhonen.
CSIR Boutek project leader, Geci Karuri, was invited to present the keynote lecture at a seminar organised to mark the 20th anniversary of IPS Finland, the Finnish branch of Inter Press Service, an alternative news agency also historically known as the "third world news agency." The invitation was based on Ms Karuri's involvement in a CSIR futures study on Africa, undertaken through the CSIR Infrastructure Thrust in support of NEPAD, and also her role as one of the national chairpersons of the South Africa Node of the Millennium Project.

Ms Karuri's presentation, entitled Africa's Development Future: Signposts and Hopes for the New Millennium, covered a range of contemporary perspectives on Africa's future as determined through a number of international studies. The presentation emphasized that there were some positive signs emerging from the continent and that there was indeed hope for Africa, despite a lot of Afro-pessimism. It then posited some of the critical pointers going forward, which were further expanded with respect to Finland's specific potential role by the respondent, Lauri Siitonen, Institute of Development Studies of the University of Helsinki.

Additional presenters were Jorma T. Mattila, the Board Chairman of the IPS Finland Association, Ramesh Jaura, the Regional Director of IPS Europe, and Pia Korhonen of Estelle, the fair trade sailing ship on which the seminar was held.

The Estelle is an 83-year old ship that was renovated mainly through voluntary work and brought into the service of fair trade 20 years ago by the Finnish third world movement. Estelle recently celebrated her 20th anniversary in the service of fair trade, and planning for her second international fair trade tour to Latin America is currently under way, following the ship's successful voyage to Angola in 2001-3.

The presentation received significant media attention in Finland, including from Kepa, the Finnish NGO umbrella organisation, which also interviewed Ms Karuri as part of Kepa's international World Village Festival that was held during the same period.
