SB'04 Africa - Regional Conference on Building and Construction Print friendly version

As reported in the July 2004 issue of Akani, the Sustainable Building 2004 - Africa conference took place between 13 and 18 September at Spier in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The local hosts of the conference were CSIR Building and Construction Technology (Boutek), the Development Bank of Southern Africa, the Construction Industry Development Board and the South African Institute of Architects.

One hundred and fifty delegates from 24 countries gathered for a week to share experience and knowledge, and discuss ways of enabling and mainstreaming sustainable building and construction in Africa. Delegates from countries as diverse as Togo, Cameroon, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, Mauritius, Ethiopia and the Congo provided balance to the strong South African and Nigerian representation, and added some Francophone flair to the proceedings.

The conference was preceded by a board meeting of the African Union of Architects and an introductory course to sustainable building presented by CSIR Boutek.

    Sustainable Building Best Practice Awards
One of the objectives of the SB'04 conference was to establish a database of sustainable buildings that come from and are appropriate to developing countries. This was encouraged by the inclusion of the Sustainable Building Awards, which focused attention on a number of projects that showcased a commitment to sustainable building. The Awards were also seen as a mechanism for raising awareness about sustainable building amongst practitioners in these countries. Read on ...

    Technical tours
The conference was bookended by two technical tours. The first was a tour of the award-winning Lynedoch building, home of the Spier Sustainability Institute and Lynedoch School, and hub of the proposed Lynedoch eco-village development. Read on ...
