The first Kenya-South Africa Roundtable Discussion on Science & Technology Partnerships Related to Infrastructure was held in Nairobi from August 31st to September 2nd, 2004. The Roundtable was planned as part of the Kenya-South Africa S&T Programme of Cooperation - a bilateral agreement signed in Kenya in August 2004 by Prof. George Saitoti (Minister of Education, Science & Technology, Kenya) and Mr Mosibudi Mangena (Minister of Science & Technology, South Africa.) The agreement provides a basis for encouraging cooperation in research between institutions in the two countries. The Roundtable was attended by over 100 delegates representing various research and tertiary education institutions, government departments and the private sector. Participants from South Africa included representatives from the CSIR, the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), the University of Witwatersrand, University of Cape Town, UNISA and the Tshwane University of Technology. The South African Department of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation (NRF) provided support to the event, which was coordinated on the South African front by CSIR Building and Construction Technology (Boutek), with additional support from the Kenya High Commission to South Africa. Organising counterparts in Kenya included the Ministry for Planning and National Development, Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis, the Architectural Association of Kenya, and the National Council for Science and Technology. The Roundtable aimed to facilitate focused utilisation of the collective resources and skills in research, science and technology in Kenya and South Africa to help address poverty and underdevelopment in both countries, and to place Africa on the path of sustainable growth and development. This is envisaged to happen through research collaboration within the context of the national priorities of both countries and global challenges. The infrastructure theme was defined in terms of five broad sectors - water and sanitation, energy, building and construction, ICT and transport. A number of cross-cutting issues such as environment were also to be engaged within this framework. The roundtable aimed to create a forum for researchers and technical specialists to:
The event resulted in a series of resolutions which will be followed up over the next six months, when a second Roundtable is envisaged to be held in South Africa. Download the following document in pdf format:
