Update on CSIR's Forensic Fire Investigation Programme

Print friendly version

Kim Yates and Anina Burger of CSIR Building and Construction Technology's Forensic Fire Investigation Programme recently returned from the USA, where they spent time catching up with the latest developments in forensic fire investigation. After conducting several fire investigations in Denver, Colorado, they attended the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) annual general meeting and training seminar, as well as several committee meetings, in St Louis, Missouri.

The highlight of the visit, however, was Anina's successful completion of the Certified Fire Investigator Examination. In order to qualify for this exam, candidates have to obtain a specified number of points in four categories (qualification, experience, court experience and ongoing training), after which they are subjected to a rigorous oral examination.

At the third annual general meeting of the SA Chapter of the IAAI at the CSIR in March 2004, Kim was re-elected President of the Chapter, while André de Beer was elected Vice President. Anina was elected Director and Bessie Noakes was re-elected Secretary/Treasurer of the Chapter, which has more than 40 overseas members. The meeting, which included a number of training sessions, was attended by 16 delegates from all over the country.
