At a function held in Johannesburg on June 9th, 2004, Murray & Roberts Construction's Graham Mullany presented the 2004 JD Roberts Award to CSIR Building and Construction Technology's Steve van Huyssteen, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to construction industry development in South Africa, over a number of years. Steve was a member of the secretariat of the Construction Industry Development Task Team, and in this support capacity contributed towards the establishment of the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). After the establishment of the CIDB, he continued to support its successful implementation. In this regard, he played an important role in the development of the CIDB governance guidelines and its first business plan and budget. Speaking at the award function, Keith Smith, Group Executive Director of Murray and Roberts, pointed out that Steve had played a leading role in the conceptualisation and development of the 2002 Status Report on the South African construction industry. "In addition, Steve was intimately involved in the perception survey of the state of the industry that formed part of the 2004 Report, including interviews with clients, contractors, designers and materials suppliers, and with the analysis and interpretation of the results," he said. Steve's most important contribution, however, was his leading role in the conceptualisation and development of construction industry indicators (CIIs) in 2002, under contract to the Department of Public Works. He was subsequently involved in the development of the CIIs for 2003 (including the development of empowerment indicators) under contract to the CIDB. These indicators will lay the foundation for ongoing measurement of the construction industry performance. Instituted in the late 1970s in remembrance of one of its founders and to encourage excellence in scientific and technological research, the JD Roberts Award is made annually, embracing the promotion of competitiveness in seeking environmentally sustainable solutions to human dilemmas. During recent years, several CSIR Building and Construction Technology top researchers have been the recipients of this award. Download the following documents in pdf format:
