Director of CSIR Building and Construction Technology newly elected president of CIB, presents keynote presentation on Re-Valuing Sustainable Construction

Print friendly version

Dr Rodney Milford, Director of CSIR Building and Construction Technology (Boutek), was elected president of the CIB (International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction) for the 2004/07 triennium during the annual meeting of the CIB General Assembly in Canada in May this year. He previously served as a member of the CIB Board and chairman of the CIB Programme Committee.

    Dr Rodney Milford, newly elected president of the
    CIB with Immediate Past President of the CIB,
    Dr Sherif Barakat of the National Research Council
    in Canada.

    Dr Rodney Milford during the annual meeting of the
    CIB General Assembly in Canada in May this year.

The CIB was established in 1953 with the support of the United Nations, as an association which aims to stimulate and facilitate international cooperation and information exchange between governmental research institutes in the building and construction sector, with an emphasis on those institutes engaged in technical fields of research.

The CIB has since developed into a worldwide network of over 5 000 experts from about 500 member organisations active in the research community, in industry or in education, who cooperate and exchange information in over 50 CIB Commissions covering all fields of building and construction-related research and innovation.

Rodney also presented a keynote presentation on "Re-valuing Sustainable Construction" at the accompanying CIB World Building Congress 2004.

The keynote presentation examines the blockages and obstacles to achieving sustainable construction, and points towards overcoming these blockages and obstacles. The presentation concludes by examining the role of the CIB in overcoming these blockages and obstacles. The presentation does not adopt the usual perspective of people, planet and prosperity, but rather examines the blockages and obstacles from the perspective of legislation, advocacy and the business case for sustainable construction.

In order to make a meaningful impact on sustainable construction, the presentation emphasises the need for the CIB and its members to:

  • communicate the business case for sustainable development, not only through cost reductions through eco-efficiencies, but also to help clients build reputation and competitive advantage through green construction;

  • become leaders as well as doers, becoming party to the policy and legislation-making process, "raising the level of the bar", balancing the needs of clients with the needs of society and the needs of the environment; and

  • support advocacy for sustainable construction, through strengthening and/or facilitating the establishment of client-driven and public sector forums for sustainable construction.
