It is sometimes difficult to apply, in a balanced and practical way, concepts from sustainable development to the design, construction and management of buildings. This is especially the case for developing countries, as much of the guidance and support has been developed in, and for, developed countries. CSIR Building and Construction Technology is addressing this through a range of projects. These include the development of an assessment tool, the Sustainable Buildings Assessment Tool (SBAT) and related processes, for addressing sustainability in building lifecycles. These tools and guidelines are being evolved through consultancy and a range of pilot projects being implemented by the CSIR. Sustainable Buildings Assessment Tool (SBAT)The SBAT was described in a paper presented at the Built Environment Professionals Conference held in Sandton, Johannesburg, recently. The CSIR has now developed a new version of the SBAT, which enables information from previous projects to be saved, thus facilitating the creation of a database of projects. An interface has also been developed to allow users to provide input on detailed criteria and make notes.
Sustainability and building performance in education and community buildings in South AfricaThe tools and process for addressing sustainability was presented at the Architectural Value and Building Performance Conference held in Hong Kong. This conference was organised by Working Group 60 of the Construction Industry Board. The paper describes how the tools and process being developed to support sustainability have been used in the Thuba Makote pilot project, also being developed by CSIR.
